Artist/Designer discussion with Jen Herzig Smith and Emil Konishi

What a privilege it was to host our first Artist Showcase event with Jen Herzig Smith at Baum-kuchen last Sunday. I am so grateful for all the love Emil put into the space to curate the experience and highlight Jen’s beautiful artwork. We dedicated our analogue table and a part of the main wall to display Jen’s work during our Sunday opening hours. Her paintings on the wall became a gentle transition from the view of the San Gabriel mountains, which we could see through our window, into our BK world, and her sketchbook with a collection of raw plant dye experiments was like a tactile playground for all of us who had a chance to flip through.

For the last few years (but maybe much longer…), I have been asking, " What is the earth telling us? What are all the trees, rocks, rivers, oceans, and fire trying to say? What are their messages?” They are lifelong questions, and I hope to explore the process of answering them for as long as possible.

On Sunday, while listening to Jen’s dialogue with Emil with her artwork in the background, I felt that Jen and her artwork stood between those particular questions and the answers…, helping me get a little closer to the wisdom held in the space between. I am grateful that many of us in the BK community resonate with the energy.
