This story resonated so much, Wakako. In the summer of 2020, I uprooted my family from our home in Portland, where we had lived since 2009, for a “dream job” up in Tacoma. We sold the house that we thought was going to be our forever house and moved in the midst of the pandemic. It quickly became clear that the job was not what I thought it was going to be and we spent the next two years dealing with the fallout. It was a rough transition, and we eventually circled back to Portland in 2022.
It’s been three years, and we’ve now actually been back in Portland longer than we were away, but I’m still unpacking all of the lessons from that time. Like you, even though we ended back where we started, I think we really needed the time away to gain new perspective. There’s so much about our life now that wouldn’t have been possible if we had stayed stuck in our old patterns and habits. So much of that time in Tacoma was really painful, in part because it was in the middle of lockdown, and in part because it led to the disruption of several long-term relationships, but at the end of the day, I think that my family and I are stronger for it.
My heart goes out to you, Lena. I can totally imagine what it was like to go through your experience. You are so brave. I am so grateful to hear that you are finding nuggets of treasure from going through it.
